The Grand Canyon in Arizona is a natural formation distinguished by layered bands of red rock, revealing millions of years of geological history in cross-section. Vast in scale, the canyon averages 10 miles across and a mile deep along its 277-mile length. Much of the area is a national park, with Colorado River white-water rapids and sweeping vistas.

National Geographic Grand Canyon Visitor Center & Grand Canyon IMAX Theatre

This information center including the IMAX theatre is located in Tusayan just outside of the National Park. It has a lot of great resources and you can also pre-purchase a park pass here. The IMAX movie, “Over the Rim and Beyond, Grand Canyon: The Hidden Secrets” is great way to learn about the natural and human history of the canyon and is highly recommended.

Canyon View Information Center

Another great information center is the National Park Visitor Center located at Mather’s Point in the Park. There are exhibits, films, maps and bookstore to explore as well as find out about the Ranger programs and lectures. A wonderful resource for all visitors – casual sightseeing and serious hiking.

Grand Canyon Apache Stables

A distinctive way to see the Canyon is by horseback! Travel along the trails to the rim of the Canyon with guided horseback tours. You can even stop for a campfire meal for a truly Western experience.

Mule Trips

There’s no better way to see the Grand Canyon than riding on a mule. This can give you the feeling of being a pioneer from another era. There are both South Rim and North Rim mule trips. South Rim trips, which are year round, are more popular and you should book well in advance. North Rim mule trips are only available from mid-May to October and can be arranged on a daily basis.

You can experience Grand Canyon National Park along the Diamond Creek or Colorado rivers. There are trips of different lengths, from one day to 25 days. Permits are necessary for river trips. You can find professionally guided trips or self-guided ones.

Kolb Studio

Kolb Studio is a studio located on the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. It was the home of the Kolb brothers, who were famous photographers and filmmakers around 100 years ago. Today it is a gallery that showcases some of the photographs taken by these brothers. You will also find books, memorabilia and special events at the Kolb Studio throughout the year.

Tusayan Museum and Ruin

Tusayan Museum provides a glimpse into a once-thriving Pueblo Indian village at Grand Canyon. Museum displays show the village’s pottery, arrowheads and other household items. A self-guided trail leads through the adjacent 800-year-old Tusayan Ruin. Ranger-led ruin tours are offered daily. Educational materials about the park and region are sold in the bookstore.

This is a chance to ride aboard an old fashioned railway car and see some of the breathtaking scenery while hearing fascinating stories and facts about the area. These trips are taken in restored railway cars and cover 130 miles from Williams to the South Rim. This is something you shouldn’t miss if you are visiting Grand Canyon National Park.

Bright Angel Bicycle Rentals

There a many outlooks over the Canyon that cannot be accessed by car but you can bike to these unique viewpoints. Try a bike ride along these hidden paths and exclusive outlooks.

Yavapai Geology Museum

Located at one of the most spectacular viewpoints of the South Rim, the Yavapai Geology Museum welcomes visitors who are interested in geology or just came for the view. You can attend a lecture by the Park Rangers or study the topographic relief model for a better understanding of how the Grand Canyon evolved.

Grand Canyon Railway

Many early visitors at Grand Canyon National Park arrived by train. The railroad originally was built to move ore from mines, but by 1901, visitors to the Canyon were choosing the $3.95 train ride over the $15, eight-hour stagecoach ride from Flagstaff. The train ran until 1968. The automobile had became America’s favorite way to travel, and rail service to Grand Canyon ended.

Desert View Drive

This is a scenic road that is near the park’s east entrance. It has some great views, along with picnic areas. What’s nice about this road is that it’s less crowded than areas of the park near the south entrance. The best views can be found at the Desert View Watchtower.

 Camper Village

This is the place to go if you want to camp out in Grand Canyon National Park. You can camp out here with a tent, RV or motor home. This South Rim campground is open throughout the year, and gives you a chance to spend some quality time in the park. Camper Village has many amenities, such as restrooms, showers and coin operated laundry.

Yavapai Museum of Geology

 The Grand Canyon region has some of the most interested geological formations in the world, and the Yavapai Museum gives you some insights into this topic. Aside from its many educational exhibits and bookstore, the museum is located in a very scenic spot that gives you some incredible views of the canyon.

Grand Canyon Deer Farm

Visitors can pet and feed deer that have been raised for such contact from birth. Save your best clothes for another day, and bring your camera to capture the memories. The deer farm gift shop has clothing, jewelry, home decor, gifts and toys.

Junior Rangers

The Junior Ranger program was designed to help kids learn about the Grand Canyon through fun activities. Aspiring Junior Rangers can pick up the activity booklet at the Visitor Center, at Canyon View Information Plaza, Park Headquarters, Tusayan Museum near Desert View, Kolb Studio or Yavapai Observation Station. There are various age-appropriate activities, including writing observations about the Canyon, answering questions, writing poems and attending a ranger-led program.
