St. Thomas Mount National Shrine. Admire displays of religious art, see the shrine of a revered saint and enjoy panoramic views of Chennai city. St. Thomas Mount National Shrine is a church on top of a hill called St. Thomas Mount. First erected in the 16th century, the church stands on the site of where tradition states that St. Thomas the Apostle was killed.
Start your visit by walking up a pedestrian-only path and staircase leading from the base of St. Thomas Mount. Pause to study the portrayals of the 14 Stations of the Cross that line the route.
The church’s architecture resembles Armenian and Syrian ecclesiastical landmarks. Above the main doorway is an inscription that reads “My Lord My God.” Note bronze plaques depicting biblical scenes such as The Last Supper. See a statue of Pope John Paul II and a stone-carved cross, thought to have been chiseled by St. Thomas himself. The courtyard surrounding the church presents views of some of Chennai’s bustling commercial areas, tightly packed residential districts and green spaces.
Watch as people of all faiths, including Christians, Hindus and Muslims, arrive at the church. Step inside to discover ancient artworks and relics. A major highlight is a painting of Mary and Jesus by St. Luke the Apostle. See 115 relics of apostles and saints, including the toe bone of St. Thomas. The altar is located on the supposed spot of the death of St. Thomas.
Located west of the Guindy neighborhood, the church is about a 30-minute drive from Chennai’s city center. Get here by catching a train from Chennai Egmore station to Guindy station and take an auto-rickshaw from there.
St. Thomas Mount National Shrine is open daily and admission is free. Attend one of the services that take place in various languages up to three times each day.
Besant Nagar Beach
Elliot’s Beach (popularly known as “Besant Nagar Beach” or “Bessie”) is located in Besant Nagar, Chennai, India. It forms the end-point of the Marina Beach shore, and is named after Edward Elliot, onetime chief magistrate and superintendent of police, Madras. It has the Velankanni Church and the Ashtalakshmi Kovil nearby. In the colonial era, it was a fairly exclusive place limited to white people. As of 2016, there are many restaurants near the beach.
There is a police outpost at the beach and the crowd is policed by means of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) to prevent drowning mishaps. In 2010, there were 11 drowning cases reported off Elliots Beach. In August 2012, the government sanctioned two more all-terrain vehicles for patrolling the beach.
An abode to Lord Venkat Krishna, Sri Parthasarathy Temple was built by the Pallavas in the 8th century. Sri parthasarathy temple is situated at Tiruvallikeni or Triplicane and is the oldest temple in Chennai. The main shrine inside the temple is of Parthasarathy or Venkata Krishna and the secondary shrine is of Vedavalli Thayaar, with that of Narasimha and Ranganatha.
The temple has incarnations of Lord Vishnu in his four forms namely Narasimha, Rama, Varaha and Krishna. It also has shrines which were built during the rule of Cholas and Vijayanagara Kings. An exquisite feature of the temple is the colored gopuram. There are two gopurams within the temple one of which is facing east and the other is facing west. The intricately carved pillars of the temple are sure to leave one spellbound.
The water tank situated within the temple is considered holy and sacred because it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi was born to sage Bhrigu in the form of Vedavalli. The Sri Parthasarathy Temple also celebrates a floral festival from mid February to mid March. This festival is held at the water tank situated within the premises of the temple.
Sri Parthasarathy Temple is thus a spectacular depiction of history, tradition and art of Indian history collated together and is an amazing tourist attraction in Chennai.

The Anna Centenary Library is an established state library of the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is located at Kotturpuram, Chennai. It is built at a cost of ₹172 crores. It is named after a former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, C. N. Annadurai. It was opened by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi.
